Mac Miller – Good News

When I think about the cultural impact of music videos, I think Mac Miller’s posthumous release of his songs have been very exciting to see. As in another of his songs just released, he explains that everybody dies, but we are all just here to have a good time. While he is no longer alive, the impact he has on so many people’s lives is remarkable. The music videos themselves feature no brand sponsorship or overt advertising, focusing solely on Miller himself. Instead, the music videos feature ads at the start of the video, bringing in revenue to Miller’s surviving family. This was very likely to be a conscious choice, as although in both circumstances a brand is profiting off of the music videos popularity, having a brand sponsorship within the video would likely detract from it’s symbolism/aesthetic and probably result in damage/anger towards that brand. Food for thought.
